Manila, the Philippines is known for its scorching temperatures and unrelenting sun. Despite this, it can snow in Manila!
Despite its reputation as a tropical paradise that offers all-year round sunshine, there are still periods when Manila experiences snowfall!
Although rare, this phenomenon is not unheard of – especially during the colder months of autumn and winter.
Does it snow in Manila? Absolutely! Even if it does not look like it from afar, the reality is that our capital city is blessed with white flakes falling from the clouds every now and again.
What’s the Weather Like in Manila?
Manila is endowed with a tropical climate, boasting temperatures between 23°C and 32°C year-round and relative humidity levels in excess of 70%.
On the whole, Manila’s weather is rather temperate, though inclement events such as heavy rains and typhoons do occur here from time to time.
On average this metropolitan area experiences just two rainy days each month; however, if one were to dig deeper into statistics from earlier this year it can be found that February had more than one occurrence of precipitation.
What Kind of Snow Is There in Manila?
Due to its tropical climate, Manila is endowed with a variety of snowfall types from powdery flakes that are quite rare to foot-deep accumulations.
The heaviest form of snowfall experienced in the city consists of crystalline flakes falling between March and May; these have caused an accumulation of more than 1″ within 24 hours on seasonal occasions such as New Year’s Day (1 January), Valentine’s Day (14 February) and Christmas (25 December).
The mildest type which can fall is known as ‘light dusting’, when light surface flurries are all that remains after a stormy winter thunderstorm – this could be observed during the month of February alone!
In one day, up to 0.3″ or less of snow may fall. On average, just 0.19 inches falls per year in Manila, while twelve-hour totals reach up to one inch!
All measurements taken here were conducted between March and June, though even then it was mostly confined to early years’ festivities like New Year’s Eve where temperatures dipped only slightly below freezing.
Snow drought has been observed for several seasons now; however, notable invasions by this phenomenon are uncommon
Can I Ski in Manila?
Manila’s tropical climate isn’t so conducive to skiing, although there are a few resorts in the neighboring provinces of Cavite and Batangas that can be reached by car. However, the closest one is about 100 kilometers away from the metropolis – too far for an affordable trip!
If you’re seeking a more leisurely option, why not rollerblade through some of Manila’s greenspace? There are several skateparks located throughout the city, providing ample opportunities for riders of all skill levels – even beginners can take advantage of these facilities!
What Is a Powdery Snow Blizzard?
A sudden burst of precipitation can quickly evolve into a blizzard, with snow or hail the primary culprits; yet, these storms often don’t suffer from prolonged periods of accumulation.
Unleavened snowflakes is what makes these storms so hardy. In fact, these are typically the indicators that an onslaught of bitter cold weather could be imminent! If there’s any hint of sleet or freezing rain falling – even on top of existing snowfall – then it’s a sure sign that it could potentially be hazardous going forward.
